One of the extra Pansjo features is that you can color the coloring pages, which you can save and even mail. The child choses a nice picture and starts painting, just using its finger. It is something the little ones just love! It is so cute to see that while first using its finger to paint, the child will always look at the finger, being surprised that there’s is no paint on it!
A close 13% of all one year olds uses a tablet and one on five preschoolers (2 years old) plays games on a smartphone. This is proved by an Dutch study by Iene Miene Media, Mediawijzer and Mijn Kind Online.
Although (fortunately!) children still play outside, the use of digital media grows explosively. Younger and younger, children become media users. Television and children’s books still are the favorite media for young children, but the use of tablets is growing fast. In families in which a tablet is available, the majority of the toddlers and preschoolers is playing with it on a regular basis. Watching YouTube is very populair. 40% of the one year olds does this frequently.

De invloed van voorlezen op de leesontwikkeling van kinderen is al vaak onderzocht. Uit veel onderzoeken blijkt dat voorlezen een positief effect heeft op verschillende aspecten van beginnende geletterdheid. Zo is er bijvoorbeeld onderzoek gedaan naar de invloed van voorlezen op de woordenschat van kleuters. Onderzoekers De Jong & Bus publiceerden in 2002 een onderzoek naar de invloed van voorlezen op leesvaardigheid. Zij richtten zich specifiek op het leren lezen van woorden.
Onderzoek naar verschillende soorten prentenboeken
De onderzoeksgroep, bestaande uit 48 Nederlandse kleuters, werd opgesplitst in drie groepen. Aan deze groepen werd hetzelfde verhaal voorgelezen, maar de vorm van het boek verschilde. De eerste groep werd voorgelezen uit een traditioneel, papieren boek. Een andere groep maakte zelfstandig gebruik van een elektronisch prentenboek, met daarin het verhaal in zowel gesproken als geschreven vorm. In dit elektronische prentenboek waren ook spelletjes verwerkt. Voor de helft van de groep met het elektronische boek werd de toegang tot deze spelletjes echter beperkt. De andere helft mocht de spelletjes wel gewoon spelen. Verder was er nog een controlegroep, bestaande uit een aantal kinderen dat niet met een prentenboek (digitaal of traditioneel) in aanraking kwam. Alle 48 kinderen voerden aan het begin en aan het eind een aantal taaltaakjes uit. De onderzoekers bekeken hoeveel de kinderen in de verschillende groepen van de prentenboeken hadden geleerd. Ze keken hierbij naar kennis van geschreven taal, zinsformulering en het verhaal in het boek.
Elektronische prentenboeken aantrekkelijk voor kleuters
Uit de resultaten bleek dat de elektronische prentenboeken erg aantrekkelijk waren voor de kleuters. Ze vonden het vooral interessant om te klikken op spelletjes, illustraties en icoontjes. De tekst van het verhaal werd minder aantrekkelijk gevonden. In de groep waar de spelletjes beperkt werden, waren kinderen die al een hoger niveau van beginnende geletterdheid hadden wel meer bezig met de tekst. Kinderen met een lager niveau van beginnende geletterdheid waren vooral geïnteresseerd in de plaatjes. Als kleuters spelletjes konden spelen in de elektronische prentenboeken bleek dit de aandacht af te leiden van (het lezen van) de tekst.
Spelletjes leiden aandacht af
De kinderen die voorgelezen werden uit traditionele prentenboeken en de kinderen die het elektronische prentenboek lazen, zonder spelletjes, gingen vooruit in het lezen van woorden. Dit gold niet voor kinderen die ook spelletjes konden spelen. Zowel het traditionele als het elektronische prentenboek zorgden ervoor dat kinderen over geschreven taal leerden. Over zinsformulering en het verhaal zelf leerden de kinderen die werden voorgelezen uit het traditionele boek het meest. Er werd geconcludeerd dat het elektronische boek in dit onderzoek minder invloed had op de beginnende geletterdheid van kinderen. Dit had onder andere te maken met de spelletjes, die de aandacht afleidden van de tekst.
Overlap van gesproken en geschreven verhaal
Zoals eerder gezegd bevatten de elektronische prentenboeken uit dit onderzoek ook geschreven tekst. In sommige prentenboeken is de geschreven tekst zichtbaar op het moment dat het verhaal wordt voorgelezen. Op deze manier komen kinderen tegelijkertijd met geschreven en gesproken tekst in aanraking. Juist deze “dubbele verwerking” zorgt ervoor dat kinderen veel leren. Leren lezen draait namelijk om het koppelen van letters aan klanken. In het prentenboek in dit onderzoek waren de audiofragmenten echter vaak losgekoppeld van de visuele (letter)informatie. Er was dus geen overlap tussen het verhaal in gesproken en geschreven vorm. Volgens De Jong & Bus zou dit de reden kunnen zijn dat er geen invloed werd gevonden van voorlezen op het lezen van woorden. Zij raadden dan ook vervolgonderzoek aan, om hier duidelijkheid over te krijgen.
Elektronische en traditionele prentenboeken
Het onderzoeksartikel wordt afgesloten met het advies dat elektronische prentenboeken geen vervanging van traditionele papieren prentenboeken zouden moeten zijn. Wel kan voorlezen met behulp van elektronische boeken een waardevolle bijdrage leveren aan het voorlezen uit traditionele prentenboeken. Volgens De Jong & Bus zijn elektronische prentenboeken vooral van invloed op het leren lezen, als ze overlappende én aanvullende ervaringen met geschreven woorden en de inhoud van verhalen bieden. Kinderen leren vooral van overlappende informatie in gesproken en geschreven taal.

As a parent, one of the most important things you can do is read to your children. Reading to children is valuable in a variety of ways, not the least of which is creating a stronger relationship with you.
You also have the power to boost your children’s learning potential simply by making books an important part of their lives. Young children who are read to are much more likely to read earlier, understand concepts better, and be faster learners than children who do not have the chance to experience books. It is never too early or too late to begin reading to and with your children.

The digital media offer for children is overwhelming. And it is constantly changing. Every day new apps, television series, games and websites are being published. How can parents, grandparents or even teachers know what app, game of movie is suitable for a child of a certain age. To help you out with this, MediaSmarties reviews children’s media, rates the suitable age and lists it in their database. I am proud to tell you that Pansjo is also listed on MediaSmarties. Unfortunately the website has no separate picture book app search criteria, so you will find Pansjo under games, but I do hope that in the future, when more picture book apps will be published, the website will provide a separate section picture book apps. Because books are so different from games. An important thing to know for parents!
An important argument in favor of book apps is that children can be exposed to
more story books, as parents can buy 3 to 5 times more book apps for the price
of a single print book.
If a family bought 10 to 12 children’s books a year for their child – let’s say a book per month – you could get 30 to 50 book apps for that same money. So there is a lot more to read. Value for money!
